“Floating” Room at Bede 6th Form College

We were approached by Morgan Ashurst Contractors who built the new Bede 6th Form College near Stockton-on-Tees @ £15k million+, as the so called “POD for Music” was leaking sound, and they had a very unhappy client.

The Problem:
The enclosure for the College’s band practice recording room was housed in an eye-catching  PINK “floating room”, that is to say a room apparently unconnected to any element of the structure; the trouble with leaking sound was that it’s support and anchoring points were connected!

Any attempt to separate the interior structure from the main structure had been met with failure; we were asked to propose a means whereby this could be achieved. The support structure was acting a sound conduit and transmitting sound frequencies through both the floor to which is was anchored and the floor in which is was set, and this caused vibrations that were amplified into the sub strate.

The Verdict:
We consulted with the chief design engineer at Boxylab s.r.l. and developed a modified design of the Boxy room to ensure that it both fitted into the space and also ensured no sound leakage. The client was delighted; here is what he had to say.

” We put the new room through its paces today with a full band and everything went excellently. The room was completely sound proof – we were able – for the first time – to monitor everything through our monitors without them being coloured by spill from the live room; the results were stunning.

The acoustics in the room are very flattering to every acoustic instrument that we recorded (including drums, acoustic guitars, mandolins, bass guitar, electric guitar and vocals). I couldn’t be more pleased. The Principal visited during the recording session and was very pleased with the results. We also had an impromptu visit from the Chair of Governors who was stunned at the new room and also at the speed at which it had been assembled (he simply could not believe that it had been built from the ground up in just two days).”
