FEATURES OF THE SEAT
- The Seat is basically flat and
horizontal to permit a range of positions and angles in relation to the
back.
- The front section takes the form
of a deep roll which facilitates leaning forward to adjust the score; violin
and viola players and others who tend to play in a forward position, tucking
one leg under the chair for stability. The curved shape prevents restriction of
blood supply to the lower legs. This has also been demonstrated to be of
particular benefit to cellists whose postural problems have hitherto been
aggravated by poor seat design.
- The side-edges of the seat are
curved downwards to reduce the risk of damage to instruments being placed to
one side during long rest periods, or when the bassoon, for instance, is in
use.

FEATURES OF THE BACK SUPPORT
- Good lumbar support in the middle
of the back to encourage full and unrestricted breathing.
- The back is of good height to
provide assistance to the player when supporting a heavy instrument, e.g. a
viola.
- A narrower than usual back-width
to provide unrestricted arm movements (horn players tend to throw their right
elbow backwards in order to face the score), and to allow tailcoats to be
flicked behind when male musicians take their seats.
- A slight concavity seen from above
to provide comfort in a range of straight and rotated positions.
- The rear surface of the back is
designed to be made of a rigid thermoplastic material to assist in the
acoustics of the new hall (a requirement of the acoustics consultants), and to
enable musicians, where possible, to hear their own sounds reflected from the
chair in front. This is especially useful when tuning up.
- The back is supported on a steel
tubular frame which, whilst flexing slightly to augment comfort, is
demonstrably strong to instill confidence.
