Sound Insulation

The property of blocking the transmission of sound of a particular material.

There are several parameters used to measure and quantify sound insulation. In Europe the value Rw – weighted sound reduction index, is used as a measure of the sound insulation provided by a material under lab conditions. In the field situation where ‘flanking’ paths are apparent, the term Dw – the weighted level difference, is used.

In the USA the STC (Sound Transmission Class) and NIC (Noise Isolation Class) are used instead of Rw and Dw respectively.
